Hi folks,
I am Vamsi Varun, here to share my experiences with TEKsystems.
TEKsystems Global Services(TGS) is a service-based company which had visited my college in NOV 2019. By that time I already had 2 offers from service-based companies in hand and preparing myself to give interviews to product-based companies like Amazon. So I don't have plans to attend any of these companies. But on that day when TEKsystems visited, I went to the presentation session just for the company of my friends ;P.
I still remember, on that morning me and my friends were asked by our placement coordinator to take a headcount of the students attending the interview. Seems like some of the coordinators were absent that day! So we counted and there were around 400 students from VIIT and VIEW! The presentation started at 10:00 appx. The company policies and their vision of the current industry seem interesting. They said that this current age doesn't want an expert in one particular area any more. The trend is changing and full-stack developers are in demand now! So they want their employees to be full-stack devs rather than being an expertise! But still, It couldn't change my mind, lol! They also mentioned about 3-6 months internship in final semester i.e, in December. After the presentation, we were instructed to go to labs for the online round. I do not want to give the test as I decided not to attend the interview anyway. But classes were dismissed and I have to wait in the canteen for my friends to come and there is no interesting thing that I can do. So my friends suggested me to come and take the test, at least it would be useful for practice. There is a programming section in that round and so I decided to give it.
Round 1:(Online)
In this round, we had a little quant, aptitude and technical MCQs along with programming section. The last section contains questions about the company(like the location of headquarters, the number of offices in India etc. ).
I didn't care much about quant and aptitude, completed it as soon as possible and proceeded to the programming section. They have given us 2 Programs(Medium level) to solve. The questions were on maths and backtracking I guess. I've done one partially. I never expected that level of questions. It's an eye-opener for me.
Finally, I left the hall thinking I won't be selected. But, fortunately got selected for the next round(i.e, GD).
Round 2:(Group Discussion)
Group Discussion had been a nightmare for me. I haven't cleared any of group discussion rounds till then(out of 2 times)! So, again I decided to attend GD so that it would be a useful experience for me.
First-round cleared students are divided into few groups and asked us to prepare a list of topics so that they can select one from them. Our group had listed a few and they didn't select any! They asked us to have GD on 'Impact of Western Culture on East and vice-versa'. We started with a good point and slowly GD became a debate!!! I supported Eastern culture is mostly affected by the west and convinced them with a strong point. Finally, they asked us to leave. I am not totally satisfied with my performance because my voice shivered a lot due to pressure even though I raised my points. This is what happens when you don't have any experience in public speaking!!! Anyway, I walked off thinking that I got better than the previous GD's and gained some confidence and experience. My thoughts were like I won't select myself with that below-par performance so why would they do!?
But seems like life had other plans for me! To my surprise, they have selected me again and I don't know why!!! Maybe they thought I raised a good point to support my opinion! We were asked to come on the next day for Technical, MR and HR rounds!
That night I thought a while whether to attend it or not! It would be arrogant if I decide not to attend the interview! And they have also mentioned about Internship. Till then, I have 2 offers but none of them had an internship! Internship in college life would be added advantage and definitely useful to get used work culture and gain some industry experience, be it a product or service-based company! So decided to give it!
From GD they've almost filtered most of the candidates and only 20-30 were left from our Vignan Colleges for further rounds.
Round 3:(Technical)
This time I am serious about the interview, unlike I was in the previous rounds! That day, shortlisted people from other places in AP were invited to attend their TR's and HR in our college. I somehow prepared my mind, decided to give my best and wanted to test my weaknesses' !!! I am poor in databases and doubted they would ask more on them!
Interviews were started and we were given to fill a form. The form had three papers with the first page being personal details and the last two were for them to fill regarding performance in each round. The students were called into the cabins and after interviewed for around 20 - 30 mins. The students came out said that questions were mostly on the database queries which I am not good at!!! And my turn arrived and I went into a cabin!
He was so young and seems like just 2-3 years senior to me! I wished him and he asked me to sit. His name is Siddarth.
Siddarth: Tell me about yourself Varun!
Me: Starting with my personal details told about my education, why I chose CSE, my coding achievements and finally ended up with my projects!
Siddarth: You profile is filled with competitive programming and organizing events!
Me: Yes sir, I am very passionate about programming and wanted to improve coding culture in my college as well. So keeping my focus on that, I failed to manage time for doing more projects!
Siddarth: That's completely fine! You have enough projects to discuss! Even I did a lot of competitive programming!
Me: (Felt a little relaxed after hearing that) Ok!
Siddarth: Could you explain to me about oops concepts you know!
Me: Listed all the core concepts of oops and explained to him with real-time examples.
Siddarth: Great! which language you are comfortable with?
Me: Being a competitive programmer, obviously I love c++.
Siddarth: Why not java?
Me: No specific reason. Probably when I started competitive programming, I only know c++ and it also has a rich set of libraries in the form of STL. So I had no specific reason to dive deep into java!
Siddarth: It's ok! Now tell me how you solve this! (Given a pattern and asked me to code it and explain the approach)
Me: Looked it for 2 mins, figured out the logic and coded it! Explained to him every step of my code!
Siddarth: (He looked at my code and tested it with a few test cases and seemed happy as it covered every edge case!) Now can you tell me how you would perform addition of 2 numbers without using + operator?
Me: Yeah, we can do it by using a-(-b)! (Seems dumb but still, I haven't used + operator right! ;p )
Siddarth: (laughed and said) Ok! now do the same without using arithmetic operators!!!
(Expected the same question being a competitive programmer)
Me: Thought a while and said an approach with bitwise AND and bitwise OR operators!
Siddarth: (Again seems like testing my logic with some test cases) You're right!
And asked more questions on algorithms and some more oops concepts(like polymorphism etc) and I answered almost everything! Asked about the coding competitions organized by me and how test cases were prepared etc,
Siddarth: Any questions?
Me: Yeah, can you tell me about your experience in TEKsystems!
(asked this question with an intention that, being a competitive programmer how he fits there and it might be the same scenario for me too!!!)
Siddarth: I joined TEK just before 10 months and worked on around 5-6 projects till now ......(Said about work culture and opportunities there!)
Me:(stunned to hear that he hasn't completed even 1 year and yet placed in interview panel of the company?!) Asked the same!
Siddarth: That is how things work here, TEK always believe in its people and if you have enough potential and proved it, then definitely you'll get what you deserve!!!
Me: That's great to hear! Can you tell me what projects you have worked on?
Siddarth: (Said about some projects) Any more questions?
Me: Can you tell me about your experience in various competitions you've attended in college life? (Seems irrelevant at the moment but I was keen to know about this)
Siddarth: (Shared his Google Code Jam, ICPC and various experiences)
Me: Thanks and finally last question! Can you please let me know whether there are any optimizations or improvements in my answers to technical questions you've asked?
Siddarth: You've answered almost everything!
Me: Ok thanks!
Left the cabin after almost 40 mins!!
Waited for 15 mins and I was called again for another round!
Round 4:(HR round)
It should be MR or TR-2 but they are busy with other candidates so I was asked to give HR first!
Entered the cabin and wished HR! Her name was Swathi. She asked me to sit!
Swathi: Tell me about yourself!
Me: (Repeated the same old story)
Swathi: So this is you as a professional! Now tell me something about you as a person! Like your strengths and weaknesses!
Me: (My thoughts were like... How can these HR's always ask these troublesome questions!!!) Told that my strength was patience, handle pressure situations well, loves technology... And finally stopped after a great struggle of saying my strengths!
Swathi: Yeah please continue...
Me: (Come on!! I said more than I know!!! What is left to say?!) (Left blank without saying anything)
Swathi: (Observing my expressions, she said) You should know about yourself more than anyone else!!! Then tell me about yourself!?
Me: Yeah! I am basically a person who wants to be a friend of everyone......
(Told about my experience as Class Representative for 3 consecutive semesters, how I tried to increase coding culture in my college with my friends, organized 3 coding competitions, initiated intra-college coding competition to select the best coder of the college thereby increasing competition among themselves etc,)
(Finally, I got something to speak about myself and I never thought being CR of the class would be helpful this way, lol!!!)
Swathi: Ok! Tell me about your background i.e, your father and mother's occupation and etc.,
Me: Told!
Swathi: Any questions?
Me: Yeah. Let me know where I need to improve myself except in communication skills? I know my communication skills are weak and I'll work on that!
Swathi: That's the only area you should work on. Nothing else! You can leave now!
Me: Thanks!
(This is the worst HR I've given so far! Clearly expressed my tension there and my mind went blank when she asked about myself! Felt really bad after that round and I got to know that I need to improve a lot!)
I lost all the hope and felt that I will not be called further after that disgusting round!
But again they called me for another round!!! I was like "What is happening!?"
Round 5:(Managerial Round)
This time the interviewer was an experienced person! He has 8 years of experience in TEK itself!
He is Deepak Kogundi!
Deepak: Hi Varun, have a seat!
Me: Thanks!
Deepak: How are you!
Me: Yeah, I am good!
Deepak: Tell me about yourself!
Me: (Said)
Deepak: Ok tell me why TEKsystems!?
Me: Frankly speaking I don't know much about the company! But what I came to know from the words of Siddarth was that in TEK, we'll have a good learning curve and challenging work! This is exactly what I expect from any company I wanted to work for! So same from TEK as well!
Deepak: Great! Explain your projects!
Me: Explained my three projects! Out of which he seems interested in a console game called "mastermind" which is is popularly known as "Cows and Bulls"! I've developed it in C language and explained every module to him!
Deepak: Yeah, it's done! You can ask any questions if you want to or you can leave!
Me: This is supposed to be TR-2 right!??
(Yes, everyone is going through TR-2 and I thought the same before coming into the cabin, but he merely asked 2-3 questions and done!?)
Deepak: Yes, it is supposed to be! But I had a word with Siddarth before this about you and it turned out to be MR! No TR-2 for you!!!
Me: Oh ok! Thank You, sir!
Left the cabin!
I didn't understand how to take that?
I had no TR-2? Why?
Because I haven't performed well in HR, so rejected?
Or because I performed well in TR-1 so no need of TR-2?
Anyway, MR completed by 12 PM for me and waited up to 7 PM for results!
Finally, they're announcing the names of the 6 selected candidates! First three students are not from Vizag or Vignan but from various places in AP, the fourth one was a student from Anits college, the fifth name was mine and the sixth one was R Vaishnavi, a student from Vignan women's(VIEW)! I am the only person to get selected from VIIT and one of the 2 students from Vignan group! I gained a lot of confidence from this interview!
Don't know how to react then! Initially attended the first-round just for practice but ended up with the offer!
Those two days were incredible! I thought it would be no use attending the drive of service-based companies anymore! But this experience had been an eye-opener for me! Learnt a lot, came to know where I was and what should I improve!
If you observe carefully, I had no thought's on the result in the first two rounds, so ended up giving my true and best! But when I decided to take the next rounds seriously, I myself raised expectations, got tensed and ended up with poor performance in HR round!
So giving your best is most important than the result. If you give your best, then the result will follow you. Maybe not immediately, but definitely! Just need to keep trying!!!
Mistake:
I was completely taken away by the thought that it was a service-based company and I had nothing to do with that! This made me feel overconfident at some point in time! But somehow ended up with better performance! And I suggest you not to do the same mistake of judging any company!!!
My Learnings:
1) Most importantly, don't divide companies as service-based and product-based at earlier stages! This thought will dilute your seriousness on the interview! Get an offer first and then plan for such things!
2)No company is less and no company is more at the beginning! Attend every interview and gain as much as experience possible! Every time, you know about something in which you need to improve! Work on it and move on!
3)At the end when it comes to a choice between multiple companies, choose the best company(then maybe product based would be a better choice)!
4)Attend every interview with a mindset so that the result cannot affect you anymore. The main goal is to give your best and to know where you lag and rectify them in the next interview! Then you automatically overcome the pressure factor!!!
